We liked Signature has DVSA Approved Driving Instructors (ADI). They’re trained by an in-house ORDIT-qualified trainer, so we’re confident in their qualifications and skills.

Beyond the experience, we also loved their attitude and approach to teaching. Student drivers said that they’re able to calm down nervous and first-time drivers.

They also felt that they were corrected without being pressured.

The lessons are comprehensive. They also offer an intensive fast-pass course, which includes 4 to 8 hours of driving per day over 2 weeks.

This is a great option for those who want to hit the road ASAP.

We also appreciate the convenience built into their service. The school provides door-to-door pick-up and drop-off from home.

Plus, students can schedule at flexible times. Overall, we’re satisfied with accessibility.

The only downside is that booking an initial session can be difficult due to demand.

Gentle, patient, and reassuring

“Bryan had been amazing with me during my time learning to drive. He has supported and guided me with all his knowledge and experience. His gentle manner has made a huge difference in my journey. His patience and reassurance with me has been outstanding. I would recommend him to anyone. Thank you so much again!”

Fantastic experience and patient instructor

“I had a fantastic experience with my instructor Kevin. He was so patient with me and a very honest guy. Everything was explained really well to me on my lessons, I was very nervous on my first couple of drives with little to no past experience, but he stuck through with me and made me feel comfortable. When I moved home to out of his teaching area, he still saw me through to passing my test, even though it took me a few tries ! Couldn’t recommend more, also I was his 177th pass!”

One of the things we liked about Passport Driving School is its introductory learner package. It’s only £50 for the first 2 hours of lessons, which is affordable in the area.

We loved how instructors personalise the experience per student. They take note of their learning pace and confidence level during practical lessons.

The range of programs also met our criteria. There’s one for new qualified drivers called ‘Pass Plus,’ designed for additional experience with motorway driving.

For those who want to get a licence fast, there are also intensive driving courses.

The track record speaks for itself. We interviewed many students who confirmed they passed their driving test on the first attempt.

We also appreciate that the school has both male and female ADI-qualified instructors. They stay updated on current driving regulations, too.

Unfortunately, a few instructors came up as rude, impatient, and didn’t show up to agreed time.

Pros

  • Affordable introductory learner course
  • Tailored driving lessons
  • Theory test preparation
  • Pass Plus driving courses
  • ADI-qualified instructors
  • High first-time pass rates
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Intensive courses available

Cons

  • Minor issues with rude and impatient instructors
  • Minor issues with no-shows

Very patient and understanding

“Could not recommend this driving school enough! My instructor was Colin and he was beyond excellent, very patient and understanding, very friendly and knew how to calm me down when my anxiety got the better of me. He was always reliable and worked around my schedule. I would give 10 stars if I could :)))))”

The strongest aspect we observed at Roadify is their personalised teaching approach. Instructors seamlessly adapt to match the learner’s pace and style.

Several students we interviewed mentioned that lessons were explained step by step. Many of them said that they built confidence fast despite being super nervous at first.

Roadify also offers a structured lessons package. The prices are for intensive options, ranging from £400 to £1,080 for 10 to 30 hours of lessons.

What’s nice is that these are all valid for 6 months from the date of booking. This makes them a flexible choice for those with inconsistent schedules.

We also appreciate that they provide video-recorded lessons. For students, it’s a great way to review their driving performance.

As for pass rates, the school has a reported 86% rate. This is higher than the UK average of 48%

The team is just relatively small compared to other schools. Availability may be limited during busy periods.

Pros

  • Personalised driving lessons
  • Flexible lesson scheduling
  • Intensive driving courses
  • Video-recorded lessons
  • 86% driving pass rates
  • Various packages available
  • Fair and favourable fees

Cons

  • Relatively smaller instruction team
  • Can be difficult to book the first time

Patient and comfortable

“Essi is really great driving instructor. I was very nervous at the start, but he was very patient with me and explained everything step by step. He never rushed me and really helped build my confidence. I felt much more comfortable driving because of him and would definitely recommend.”

Paulos School offers comprehensive driving options. The rates are flexible, starting at £40 per hour for manual driving and £42 for automatic driving lessons.

For students who want to save money, there are also block booking packages. This can be 10 hours of manual lessons or 10 hours of automatic lessons.

We liked these packages as this allows learners to build consistent progress over multiple sessions.

The ‘Pass Plus’ option is great for newly qualified drivers. It includes 6 hours of advanced driver training, so they can improve in more challenging road situations.

For learners preparing for their practical exam, we also liked that they assist with driving test bookings.

In line with this, many students reported passing on the first attempt, usually with very few minor mistakes.

Students credit the instructors for focusing on individual weaknesses.

There were just a few complaints of not having satisfactory experiences. This may vary depending on the instructor assigned.

  • Driving test booking available
  • Personalised driving lessons
  • High number of first-time test passes
  • Flexible lessons scheduling

  • Minor issues with unsatisfactory lessons

Comfortable and enjoyable

“Paulo is honestly the best driving instructor I could’ve asked for, he explains everything in such a clear, simple way that it all just clicks. He helped me get fully comfortable behind the wheel hence building up confidence. Every lesson was well structured, easy to understand and actually enjoyable. I’d highly recommend Paulos school of Motoring to anyone looking to pass their test and become a safe and confident driver.”

“I had a great experience learning to drive with Paulos. He is a patient and encouraging teacher who works through things very methodically so you can see your driving improving in every lesson. He was also really accommodating in terms of organising lessons around my availability which made the process much smoother.”

5. DRIVE NEWCASTLE Driving School

Opening Hours:

  • Monday – Sunday: 8:00 AM – 9:30 PM

One thing we appreciate about Drive Newcastle is its structured lesson format. Lessons typically last one hour, allowing learners to focus on key driving skills without feeling overwhelmed.

They’re among the more affordable options too. Single lessons for manual cars cost £38 per hour; those for automatic cars cost £40 per hour.

There are also block booking packages for a more consistent progress. We loved that they offer discounted rates and priority lesson booking for these options.

The school offers additional programs designed to help learners progress at different speeds. There are intensive driving lessons, a Pass Plus course, refreshers, and specialised nervous support.

Pass rates are impressive. As of this writing, they have an impressive 74% first-time driving test pass rate.

Most students said that they had very few minors and even zero faults at all.

However, we encountered a complaint about a cancelled lesson and a lack of follow-up communication. Still, these aren’t normal for the school.

Pros

  • Affordable lessons fees
  • Wide range of additional programs
  • Block booking packages
  • Discounted rates for packages
  • Over 20 years of experience
  • 74% first-time driving test pass rate
  • Pass Plus course
  • Test-ready driving preparation

Cons

  • Minor issues with cancelled lessons
  • Minor issues with a lack of follow-ups

Incredibly patient and amazing instructor

“I’ve just passed my driving test and I honestly couldn’t have done it without Jumara. I really appreciated all the help and support throughout my lessons. I’ve always been a very nervous learner, but she was incredibly patient and stuck with me every step of the way. She genuinely helped me through one of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do. Such a lovely person and an amazing instructor. I highly recommend her to anyone looking to learn to drive.”

Soph_mo29 | Google Review

Highly recommended

“Jumara was a lovely driving instructor very patient and extremely helpful. Her instructions were always clear, and she took the time to explain everything properly, which really boosted my confidence. I passed my driving test today with only 2 minors and couldn’t have done it without her support. I’d highly recommend her to anyone learning to drive.”
