The Best Dog Trainers in Leeds Local Pet Owners Completely Trust

Our review criteria for selecting the best dog trainers in Leeds focus on ethical standards and proven efficacy: Methodological Integrity: We prioritised trainers who utilise humane, science-backed techniques and explicitly avoid outdated "dominance" or aversive methods.  We made sure they prioritise positive reinforcement to build a strong bond between dog and owner. Professional Accreditation: Preference was given to members of recognised UK bodies such as the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), or the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC).  This ensures they adhere to strict industry standards and ongoing education. Success Rate & Reputation: We evaluated providers based on 2025–2026 verified testimonials, specifically looking for sustained behavioural changes and high client confidence scores.  We focused on real-world results that owners could maintain long after the training sessions ended. Facility & Safety: We selected trainers with secure, professional environments (indoor and outdoor) and comprehensive public liability insurance to ensure a safe learning space for all breeds.  A controlled environment is crucial for effective learning, especially for anxious or reactive dogs.

Finding someone who really understands the science behind dog behaviour is rare, but Dawn, the owner of No Longer in the Doghouse, brings an incredible level of expertise.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree and has almost two decades of hands-on experience, which means her methods are deeply rooted in proven animal behaviour science rather than just guesswork.

I sent a friend her way when their terrier was acting up, and they were blown away by how Dawn’s background in the veterinary industry influenced her approach.

She doesn’t just look at the behaviour; she factors in the dog’s physical health and diet, ensuring a truly holistic solution. And because she’s fully accredited by the Kennel Club, you know the training is delivered to a recognised, high standard.

They really go the extra mile by customising training plans for every single dog, directly addressing specific behavioural issues instead of relying on a rigid curriculum.

The only downside is that if you live outside her immediate service radius, you might have to pay a little extra for travel during home visits.

Pros

  • Wide geographical coverage for 1-on-1 sessions
  • Highly tailored behavioural solutions
  • Structured progression in group training
  • Mandatory preliminary telephone screening

Cons

  • Travel surcharges for areas outside the primary radius

Customer Reviews

Knowledgeable trainer calmed dog and owner.

I’m really grateful to Dawn.  Not only does she understand dogs really well but also people, as she has helped calm both me and my dog down during walks.  My dog Millie has been a bit snappy with other dogs in certain situations since she had pups.  This has made me feel quite anxious when I walk her but with some brilliantly insightful suggestions both myself and Millie can enjoy our walks again. Dawn is clearly a knowledgeable, experienced and very patient dog trainer.  I would highly recommend her.

Reactive rescue dog became happier and calmer.

Dawn is an excellent trainer of dogs and their owners! We have a very reactive rescue dog and have been on an incredible journey with him thanks to Dawn.  She is so knowledgeable about dog behaviour. She is also extremely patient with dogs and their humans.  Thanks to Dawn we now have a much happier and calmer dog.  I would highly recommend No Longer in the Dog House.

Dealing with a highly reactive dog is stressful, but Yorkshire Canine Academy specialises in exactly that.

They have successfully rehabilitated thousands of reactive dogs using a very straightforward 5-step approach, proving that even the most stubborn breeds can learn new habits.

What really stands out is their confidence in their methods; they offer a 100% money-back guarantee on their Training with Instinct program. It’s reassuring to know that if you don’t see major improvements, your investment is protected.

A large number of their clients actually go to them after other trainers have failed, which says a lot about their effectiveness. They prefer to tackle tricky behaviours right where they happen, often using remote coaching to fix issues in your own living room.

They also offer a variety of formats, from one-on-one sessions to intensive residential training. However, if you want their intensive face-to-face help and live out of the way, you’ll need to commit to the commute.

Also, keep an eye on the calendar, as that money-back guarantee has a strict 60-day limit.

Pros

  • Tailored problem-solving programs
  • Flexible delivery formats
  • Environment-specific virtual coaching
  • Convenient online booking portal

Cons

  • Travel required for intensive face-to-face help
  • Strict 60-day timeframe for refunds

Reactive dog transformed in a few days.

Thank you to the YCA team, especially to Jacob for teaching us some valuable lessons.Viggo, our reactive GSD cross Belgian malinois, was a different dog within few days of training with Jacob. Before, we couldn’t take him anywhere without him reacting to dogs and people. He was growling ,lunging and barking and wanted to eat everyone that passed by.We were taught how to correctly work on him and now we can we can walk in between people with him just glancing at them.

Excellent structured program with expert support.

Highly recommend the Yorkshire Canine Academy 🐾 🐾

A huge thank you to Elisha our assigned trainer.

The training programme is excellently constructed and detailed, with videos to follow in each part of the training process, plus many more for each issue you come across.

Contact with the trainers via WhatsApp to have any questions answered by the experts, help is always on hand to guide you through the training.

Visits to the academy helped us improve our training and handle situations correctly when presented. You will find all the trainers are very helpful.

If you’re looking for a completely force-free environment, Bankhouse Barkers Dog Training Club is an excellent choice.

Sam, the main trainer, is officially approved by the dog training college, guaranteeing that all classes rely on modern, kind methods without any harsh corrections.

They really prioritise safety, especially for growing pups, using sensible equipment like jump bumps instead of high hurdles to protect their joints.

They keep their class sizes capped at just five dogs, which means you get a lot of personalised attention in a calm setting.

I had a colleague join their agility course, and they loved the private Facebook group where Sam drops helpful homework and videos between sessions. If you just want to have some fun at home, they even run Zoom classes teaching beginner-friendly tricks.

Just be aware that you can’t skip straight to the fun stuff; if you want to do agility, completing their foundation course first is mandatory. Also, for those online trick classes, you need to make sure your tech setup, including a mic and camera, is solid.

Pros

  • Capped class sizes (max 5 dogs)
  • Safe foundation equipment for puppies
  • Flexible standalone summer workshops
  • Strong focus on welfare and safety

Cons

  • Strict prerequisite for agility courses
  • Tech requirements for virtual classes

Fun, positive reward-based training for bonding.

Amazing dog trainer, highly recommend! Positive reward based training is all you need to train & bond with your dog/s! We have done zoom training during covid times, workshops with the newest pup! In person class with my oldest dog, 1-2-1 agility training and the online trick training class.. all of which have been great! I’ve also signed up to do the agility class with my youngest dog! Sam is always happy to help & give advice, the training is fun for both you & the dog! What more could you want!

Brilliant club, helpful for owners and pups.

Great Dog Club in a good location with good facilities. Really helpful with our Pup and training me the owner 🙂 Sam is brilliant – enthusiastic trainer who took time out to assist us as individuals as well as a group to get to know our dogs. As owners the ground work you learn really pays off weeks after puppy has school finished. I’m looking forward to Intermediate training when this starts in November. Lots of opportunity to learn & have fun with my dog. Agility on the horizon thanks to Bankhouse Barkers Dog Training Club & Sam 🙂

4. Leeds Dog School

leeds-dog-school

Website: leedsdogschool.co.uk

Contact: 07990930846
Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00AM–9:00PM | Saturday & Sunday 9:00AM–9:00PM

Leeds Dog School is a lifeline for anyone struggling with a newly adopted rescue dog. They have over 18 years of experience specifically helping overwhelmed owners turn frustrating situations into calm, controlled environments.

They handle everything exclusively one-on-one, meaning all the training happens right in your own home or on your usual walking routes. This targeted approach is incredibly effective for severe behavioural problems like lead pulling or aggression.

Interestingly, they don’t rely heavily on treats, focusing instead on building a lasting bond so your dog behaves well even when there isn’t a snack involved.

Training the owner is a massive part of their philosophy, ensuring you get a thorough handover to keep the progress going. If you need a more intensive intervention, they also provide a board and train service at their licensed kennel.

Just keep in mind that they completely skip group classes, so if you’re primarily looking to socialise a puppy in a class setting, this isn’t the right fit. Also, their treat-free philosophy might require an adjustment if you’re used to purely positive reinforcement.

Pros

  • Intensive boarding option available
  • Highly tailored, in-home problem solving
  • Comprehensive owner support and handover
  • Expertise in severe behavioural issues

Cons

  • No group class availability
  • Avoids purely treat-based training

Great advice stopping excessive barking.

Thanks to Steve for his help with my miniature Maltese who loves to bark at everything and anything. Steve came round to our house, met the little one and gave us some great advice and training session to try and stop the barking. He did amazing and we had a first great day with changes already. Thoroughly recommend Steve for anyone looking for a dog trainer for a reactive dog.

5. The Dog Training Company HQ

Website: thedogtrainingcompany.uk
Address: Topcliffe Cl, Tingley, Wakefield
Contact: 01133 226 506 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday to Friday 8:45AM–5:30PM | Saturday 9:00AM–1:00PM

The Dog Training Company HQ focuses heavily on building a solid communication framework before tackling any specific problems. They’re fantastic at digging into the root cause of behavioural issues, which ensures the training actually sticks long-term.

Their Pre-Training Assessment is incredibly thorough, making sure they understand exactly what’s going on before you even start.

If you’re a busy professional needing fast results, their intensive Boost Day is a great option. Your dog works one-on-one with a trainer all day, and it wraps up with a dedicated one-hour session just for you to go over the theory and homework.

They offer a lot of flexibility, allowing you to train at their centre, in your home, or through a residential program.

The catch is that you must complete their preliminary assessment before jumping into any training, which adds an extra step.

Also, they’re very strict about equipment; they might ask you to stop using certain aids, like head collars, if they feel it’s just masking the real problem.

Pros

  • Thorough Pre-Training Assessment
  • Targeted fixing of specific behaviours
  • Flexible training locations (home, centre, residential)
  • Convenient online booking system

Cons

  • Mandatory preliminary assessment step
  • May require removing specific training aids

Customer Reviews

Right fit for unmanageable working line dog.

Would highly recommend the dog training company.  Never owning a dog before, I never quite comprehend what a dog entailed let alone a working line dog. At around 6 months it came apparent that exercise and being in a loving family wasn’t enough for  her. She was becoming unmanageable. After a-bit  of research I came across the dog training company and decided that this training company seemed the right fit, thankfully this decision was correct.

Lead pulling stopped, walks are a pleasure.

Adam is an excellent trainer and has really made a difference with my Show Cocker Spaniel. Murphy is no longer pulling on the lead and walks with him are now a pleasure 😊 I would 100% recommend Adam to help with your dogs training as he helps train your dog but trains & helps you!
