The 5 best orthopaedic specialists in Birmingham who actually treat joint pain

Quality: We cross-checked patient audits, published results, and real-world testimonials to get the full picture.

Expertise: We zeroed in on those with experience in knee, hip, foot, or shoulder. We also considered whether they actively contribute to medical research and use the latest treatments.

Patient experience: We listened to what people said about communication and follow-up. No one wants to be left guessing about their rehab or what happens next.

Range of treatments: We also looked for places that do it all in one spot—from diagnosis to rehab—so people aren’t bouncing between clinics for scans, surgery, and physio.

No one should have to hobble out of a clinic clutching a leaflet and feeling no clearer about their dodgy knee or stubborn shoulder. Yet we kept hearing about people chasing their own X-ray results or spending months in physio for a misdiagnosed ankle injury.

Experiences like these are frustrating, and they can seriously slow down recovery. They also show how much difference the right orthopaedic specialist can make from the start.

That’s what led us to take a closer look at orthopaedic specialists in Birmingham. We talked to patients, ran surveys, and verified credentials and track records to get a sense of who can really be trusted.

Here are the ones that consistently stood out for excellent patient care, long history of successful treatments, and clear communication.

How much does it cost to see an orthopaedic specialist in Birmingham?

It costs at least £95 to see an orthopaedic specialist in Birmingham for a basic consultation. This price is just an estimate. The actual price will depend on the services, the specialist, and more.

1. UK Knee & Sports Injury Clinic

Contact Details: +447779928532

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday – 9 AM to 5 PM

Website

UK Knee &  Sports Injury Clinic stands out for its personalised care, especially for younger, active people dealing with knee or hip issues.

Professor Prakash leads the team, and he stands out for his genuine care for his patients’ health. Instead of jumping straight to surgery, he seeks ways to keep his patients’ joints healthy for as long as possible.

We like that he uses conservative treatments, like advanced injection therapies, before suggesting anything more invasive. One patient told us she felt reassured knowing she could try these options first for her hip pain.

One footballer appreciated that  instead of rushing into a knee replacement, he was guided through keyhole surgery and a targeted rehab plan. This allowed him to get back to the pitch sooner.

He also has experience with mobile-bearing knee replacements and cartilage transplants, so even patients with tricky cases aren’t turned away. One runner shared that after a cartilage transplant, she was able to get back to jogging without pain.

The only catch is that the clinic sticks to knees and hips. If patients need help with their shoulders, spines, or feet, they’ll need to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Personalised care for younger active people
  • Conservative treatments
  • Targeted rehab plans
  • Mobile-bearing knee replacements
  • Cartilage transplants

Cons

  • No assistance for shoulders, spine or feet

Professor Prakash was very kind and understanding

After years of knee pain and being unable to obtain medical assistance that helped, my nephew recommended Professor D Prakash who had operated on both of his knees. Professor Prakash was very kind and understanding and said he was sure he could help me. Following X-rays and scans, he explained clearly the replacement procedure that he was recommending, I was very impressed and went ahead. I am so pleased with the result and the follow up, I feel I have my life back, sometimes when I’m walking I forget that I had an operation at all. Thank you Professor Prakash

Wonderful, attentive, friendly surgeon

“Mr Prakash is a wonderful, attentive, friendly surgeon, the before and after care has been 100%. He is a doctor that actually listens to his patients, when i need my other knee done i hope he will be the one to operate. All i can say is a massive THANKYOU!”

2. Mr Marcus Green

Address: Orthopaedic Department, BMI The Priory Hospital, Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham

Contact Details:+441214461673

Website

Marcus Green is known for his expertise in knee and shoulder pathology and performs both arthroplasty (joint replacement) and arthroscopy (“keyhole surgery”).

Keyhole surgery uses tiny incisions and a camera, so recovery is usually quicker. Meanwhile, joint replacement is the traditional method with a larger cut.

Whichever route patients take, his attention to detail seems to make recovery go more smoothly.

One patient we spoke to said she was back at work in just a few weeks after her assisted knee replacement. She credits Marcus Green’s surgical efficiency and aftercare for that quick turnaround.

Another patient mentioned their rotator cuff repair came with a rehab plan that actually felt personalised, not just a generic printout.

We also like that Marcus takes time to discuss with his patients the best rehabilitation plans to help them get back to their everyday lives as quickly as possible.

The only downside: the clinic itself feels a bit stuffy. This can make longer waits uncomfortable, especially if patients are there for hours.

Pros

  • Knee and shoulder pathology
  • Performs arthroplasty and arthrosco
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Smooth recoveries
  • Personalised treatments
  • Discusses rehab plans

Cons

  • Stuffy clinic

He made me feel very at ease

“Marcus and his team at the Priory are second to none. I had an ACL reconstruction and meniscus surgery with him. He made me feel very at ease about the whole process, and gave me many options for the surgery that suited me. I wouldn’t think twice about having him work on me again. If you have issues with your knees or shoulders, Marcus is the man for the job.”

Give me my life back in the form of knee replacement surgery

“Mr Green give me my life back in the form of knee replacement surgery. 12 years on Mr Green I’m still going strong.THANK YOU”

3. Dr Hari Prem

Address: 81 Harborne Rd, Birmingham B15 2FL

Contact Details:+441214508928

Dr Hari Prem’s clinic specialises in foot and ankle surgery and limb reconstruction. What really sets him apart is that he treats everyone, from newborns to older adults.

One parent told us about their toddler, who was born with a clubfoot, a condition where a baby’s foot is twisted inward and downward. Dr Hari’s use of gentle stretching and casting helped correct the baby’s foot position in no time.

His expertise extends seamlessly to adults, especially in procedures like total ankle replacements and arthroscopic surgeries.

One runner we spoke to was back to jogging within months after a tricky ankle replacement. He credits Dr Prem’s steady hand for making it possible.

He also has a knack for tackling rare foot problems, like spring ligament ruptures and peroneal spastic flat feet.

One woman with a stubborn flat foot said she’d seen three other doctors before Dr Prem figured out the real issue and got her walking pain-free again.

The only real downside is that Dr Prem’s clinic is laser-focused on feet and ankles. If you need help with hips, knees, or shoulders, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Excellent limb reconstruction
  • Excellent ankle replacement
  • Expertise in arthroscopic surgeries
  • Steady surgical hand
  • Tackles rare foot problems
  • Treats patients of all ages

Cons

  • Feet and ankles only

Fantastic consultant

“Fantastic consultant. Extremely knowledgeable, kind and patience, who actually listens to you. Very thorough.”

He explained everything about my condition

“I went to the priory hospital on the 22nd August i saw Mr Hari Prem from the time he introduced i felt completely at ease he explained everything about my condition i was hugely impressed”

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Friday – 8 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Saturday – 8 AM to 11:30 AM

Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic stands out for its excellent patient care. In fact, many patients we spoke with said their orthopaedic specialist stayed on top of their care until their very last appointment.

It’s also impressive how well they handle tricky cases. One patient told us he came in after a failed meniscus repair somewhere else and ended up walking out with his mobility back after an arthroscopic revision from Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic.

The team doesn’t just tick boxes with their audits and outcome tracking too. They actually use the results to fine-tune care. For example, a patient’s rehab plan was changed halfway through to speed up her recovery after ACL surgery.

The orthopaedic specialists here don’t rush to operate, either. We like how they walk their patients through all the non-surgical options before discussing surgery, which really puts many nervous patients at ease.

The only downside is the 20-minute wait in the waiting room. One guy told us he hadn’t factored in how inconvenient it was to wait before seeing the doctor.

Pros

  • Excellent patient care
  • Handles tricky cases
  • Care for better recovery
  • Don’t rush to operate

Cons

  • 20-minute wait in the waiting room

Humour, honesty, and 200% caring

Address: Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Bristol Rd S, Northfield

Contact Details:+441216854000

Operating Hours: Open 24 hours

Website

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the kind of place where patients can sort out more than one problem in a single visit.

Their range of specialities means patients don’t have to bounce between clinics if they’re dealing with a few different aches or injuries.

They cover everything from nagging foot and ankle pain to hydrotherapy sessions and advanced scans. Even cancer care and physio for pain management are offered in the clinic.

One patient we spoke to managed to get his bone tumour sorted and start physio, all without having to hunt down another specialist or switch hospitals.

What also stood out to us was how the staff keep things clear at every step. At the pre-op appointment, the specialists walk patients through their scan results and explain what will happen next.

Another patient appreciated that, even after the procedure, her orthopaedic specialist followed up and provided practical rehab tips she could use at home.

The only real downside is the wait. Getting an appointment can take a week or so.

Pros

  • Wide range of orthopaedic services
  • Handles cancer care and physio
  • Walks patients through scans
  • Easy to follow explanations
  • Great follow-ups

Cons

  • Appointments are hard to get

The experience from the initial appointment to discharge, has been superb.

I have recently had a second total knee replacement at the Royal orthopaedic hospital under the excellent care of Mr. Giebaly and his team. On both occasions  the experience  from the initial appointment to discharge, has been superb. All appointments have been on time, the care and kindness from every member of staff has been wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. I don’t think my experience or clinical outcome would have been better if I had paid for private health care.

Thank you all so much for skills and care that you provide.”

Their expertise, compassion, and care throughout our journey

“My son recently underwent spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, and we are incredibly grateful to the amazing medical team — Mr. Mehta, Dr. Da Silva, and Mr. Morgan Jones — for their expertise, compassion, and care throughout our journey.

Thank you to all the nurses, staff, and everyone who’s played a part in this journey. We feel truly blessed and supported.”
