The 10 best swimming pools in Newcastle worth diving into

I totally get that urge to just jump into the water. Usually, it’s the heat pushing me. Other times it’s more about needing to move, clear my head, and find a bit of calm.

That’s probably the adult in me talking. For kids, it’s all about fun. There’s something about swimming that hits differently for everyone.

So if you’re looking for some great swimming pools around Newcastle, you’re in luck. I’ve been pool-hopping around town to find the best spots.

Stick around to know more!

Operating hours:

  • Monday: 6 AM – 9:30 PM
  • Tuesday: 6 AM – 9:45 PM
  • Wednesday to Thursday: 6 AM – 9 PM
  • Friday: 6 AM – 9:15 PM
  • Saturday: 8 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Sunday: 8 AM – 3 PM

Price: £

The pool at Elswick Community is one of the warmest I’ve tried, which is heated to around 29.5°C. The beach-style entry makes it easy for both toddlers and nervous adult swimmers to ease in gradually.

The pricing is refreshingly affordable compared to private gyms or larger chains. Adult swims at £5, kids at £3, and family swim tickets for £14.

The baby swim lessons they have offer a great deal. Plus, the variety of classes (from scuba and triathlon training) really shows that they’ve thought about every age and ability.

I’ve also heard that Phil, who was the swimming lesson instructor there, was patient and had the right amount of humour to put everyone at ease.

Pro tip:

If it’s your first time at the Elswick Community gym, ask for a free induction session. An instructor will show you how to use the equipment safely and help you create a workout plan that suits your goals.

2. East End Pool & Gym

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 6:30 AM – 9 PM
  • Saturday: 8 AM – 4 PM
  • Sunday: 8 AM – 3 PM

Price: £

The main 25-metre pool in East End is perfect for casual lengths or focused lane swimming, but I think the water is a little chilly.

There were few distractions, like people gathering at the end of the lanes, but it still felt like a proper place to get some exercise in.

Families seem to love the leisure pool, toddler area, flumes, and Aqua Splash sessions. There’s even a very shallow pool for the tiniest visitors. I also have to praise the cleanliness and family-friendly vibe of this place.

Beyond the workout spaces, there’s a sauna and steam room for winding down. The on-site cafe also serves up decent food and drink options.

Pro tip:

The changing rooms are fine, but the lighting can be a bit dim. If you’re getting ready early in the morning or bringing kids, packing light and having everything organised will make life easier.

3. The City Baths

Address: Northumberland Rd

Contact details: +44 191-261-7207

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 6:30 AM – 9 PM
  • Saturday to Sunday: 8:30 AM – 4 PM

Price: ££

The building itself of The City Bath is stunning with old-school charm and a 1920s art deco vibe. It’s been done up nicely so it doesn’t feel outdated. The pool, especially, has loads of natural light and restored tiles which makes it feel like not just another gym.

The pool is 25 metres and perfect for lane swimming, so I didn’t see any kids splashing around. It stays pretty quiet, especially in the mornings.

Some people complained that it’s not heated, but it is heated. It’s just kept cooler to make swimming easier.

The changing rooms can be better, though. They’re clean, but quite small and can get a bit cramped at busy times. You get 50 minutes for your swim, and that includes time in the poolside sauna, which is a nice way to end the session.

Pro tip:

Bring your own towels and flip-flops. They don’t always provide them unless you’re on the premium membership or book-specific packages.

4. Jesmond Pool & Gym

Address: St George’s Terrace

Contact details: +44 191-281-2482

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 7 AM – 10 PM
  • Saturday to Sunday: 8 AM – 7 PM

Price: ££

The swimming pool in Jesmond is 22 metres long, which makes it versatile enough for both recreational and fitness-focused use. The schedule includes everything from lane swimming and family sessions to aquafit and master classes.

I heard they also offer some unique options like mermaid experiences and chill-out swims. There’s also a sauna and steam room right by the pool, which is a relaxing post-swim option for those who want to try it out.

One of the biggest strengths of the place is its opening hours. Unlike many pools that close early in the evening, Jesmond Pool stays open until 10 PM on some nights.

Pricing seems reasonable, with single swim sessions starting at £5.50 for adults and £4 for juniors. Membership options are available too, including combined gym and swim access.

Pro tip:

If you live nearby and plan to use the gym and pool frequently, membership packages may work out cheaper than paying for individual sessions.

5. The Lakeside Centre

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 6:30 AM – 10 PM
  • Friday: 6:30 AM – 9 PM
  • Saturday to Sunday: 8:15 AM – 6 PM

Price: ££

The Lakesides Centre’s pool is a 25-metre. It offers six wide lanes and ranges from 1 to 2 metres deep, which makes it suitable for all skill levels. There’s also a dedicated learner pool with easy steps and a consistent 0.9-metre depth.

Facilities are pretty clean and accessible. They have family and single cubicles, baby changing facilities, and a vanity area with hairdryers. I also appreciate the spectator seating where parents can watch the lessons or small events with their little ones.

There’s a range of programs offered, including swim lessons for all ages, aqua fitness sessions, and swim squads. These are supported by a team of staff who maintain a friendly and professional vibe at the centre.

Pro tip:

The pool is used for different programs, so check the posted timetable to avoid disappointment.

6. Sport Central

Address: Northumberland Rd

Contact details: +44 191-227-4700

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Sunday: 7 AM – 10 PM

Price: ££

Tucked within Northumbria University’s city campus, the pool of Sport Central is 25 metres long. It has six lanes and a clever movable floor, allowing the depth to be adjusted between 1.25 and 2 metres.

For alumnus, the pay-as-you-go session is just £3 for a solid 60-minute swim. That time includes getting changed, so I suggest coming in prepared with swimsuits on under your clothes to maximise your time in the water.

I also loved how spotless everything was from the pool to the showers and changing rooms. The UV filtration system made the water feel fresh without the usual strong chemical smell. There’s also a gentle ramp to access the wet side changing area.

Pro tip:

If you prefer a calmer swim, aim for the designated quiet hours. These are Wednesdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. These slots are ideal if you want a more peaceful experience.

7. Hadrian Leisure Centre

Address: St Peter’s Rd, Wallsend

Contact details: +44 191-643-2025

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 7:15 AM – 10 PM
  • Friday: 7:15 AM – 9 PM
  • Saturday to Sunday: 8:15 AM – 6 PM

Price: ££

The pool area inside Hardian Leisure Centre is spacious and well-maintained, making it perfect for both fitness and leisure. There are separate single and family changing cubicles so it’s really easy to find what you need here.

I personally love that they have baby-changing facilities and a vanity area. It’s complete with hairdryers, which can make your visit here more comfortable, especially when you need a quick freshen-up after your swim.

The inflatable course in the pool is also a hit with the kids. It’s also great to see the lifeguards being so proactive, reminding everyone of the rules while still keeping the fun going.

Pro tip:

Don’t forget a £1 coin or token for the lockers. The system is simple, and you’ll get your deposit back, but it’s always good to have one on hand before you arrive.

8. West Denton Leisure

Website

Address: W Denton Way, West Denton

Contact details: +44 191-260-0505

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 6:30 AM – 9 PM
  • Saturday: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Sunday: 7:30 AM – 2 PM

Price: ££

The standout feature of West Denton Leisre is the 33-metre main pool. It’s actually the longest one in Newcastle, giving plenty of space for both fitness swimmers and lane swimming.

Aside from that, they also have a teaching pool, which is perfect for beginners or kids learning to swim. The intermediate training tank, on the other hand, is great for more serious swimmers.

There’s also a fitness suite with cardio machines, weights, and resistance equipment. It’s a great place to get in a workout after a swim.

Pro tip:

If you or your kids are looking to improve your swimming skills consider signing up for their Better Swim School. They offer lessons for all ages and skill levels.

9. Mineral House Spa, Pool & Gymnasium

Address: Crowne Plaza Newcastle – Stephenson Quarter by IHG, Hawthorn House, Hawthorn Sq, Forth St

Contact details: +44 191-562-3333

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Sunday: Open 24 hours

Price: £££

The pool inside Mineral House isn’t really that huge, but the black tiles and the warm water give it such a calming feel. I also liked the soft, zen-like music that was playing by the pool during my visit, but some people said it wasn’t a regular thing.

It was a nice surprise that the pool didn’t need to be booked ahead, so I just walked in and unwind. There’s also a steam room and spa pool nearby, and both are really clean and well-kept.

That said, it get busy at one point with a few kids jumping in and splashing around. Since it’s meant to be more of a spa experience, it’d be nice if there were adult-only hour in the evening to keep that peaceful vibe going.

Pro tip:

Reception is patchy in the lower spa level. Since mobile use is discouraged around the pool, it’s a good time to unplug. Bring a book or just plan to switch off for a while.

10. David Lloyd Newcastle

Website

Address: Castles Farm Rd, South Gosforth

Contact details: +44 191-284-1275

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 6 AM – 10 PM
  • Saturday to Sunday: 7 AM – 9 PM

Price: £££

David Lloyd has several pools to choose from, including the indoor pool, the outdoor pool, and the kids’ pools.

The indoor pool is 25 metres long and the depth stays the same all the way through. It’s great if you’re just there to get some lengths or take it easy.

The outdoor pool is heated and comfortable. The area around it is set up with loungers and decking, so I can imagine it being a solid hangout spot in the summer.

If you’ve got kids, they have an indoor splash pool for them. It’s warm, has loads of toys, and it just feels like a safe space for little ones to mess about in the water.

Pro tip:

They have different swim sessions throughout the day so check the pool timetable. If you’re after a peaceful swim, aim for the adult-only slots. If you’ve got kids, those family sessions are ideal.
