Manchester Hip & Knee Clinic caught our attention for one main reason: Mr Kim, their lead orthopaedic specialist. He is known for using robotic-assisted surgery and has done more than 1,500 robot-assisted hip and knee replacements.
He uses the MAKO robot arm to tailor each operation to the patient. One former patient told us he was back to cycling quickly after a knee replacement and said the precision led to less swelling and a smaller scar.
Mr Kim also has an excellent bedside manner. One person who’d been told for years to just live with hip arthritis said Mr Kim finally made her feel listened to.
He’s also on top of aftercare. He provides regular post-op check-ins to assess how patients are doing after surgery, whether it was for robotic hip or knee replacement.
Since the clinic only offers private care, appointments here are quick, and there’s no long wait in the waiting room.
The only downside is the price—robotic-assisted procedures here are at the higher end.

OrthTeam Centre is a one-stop clinic for anything musculoskeletal or neurological. They handle everything from tricky elbow arthroscopies to sports injuries and pain management, all under one roof.
They are very meticulous during any surgical procedure. One woman who got an elbow arthroscopy told us the surgeon guided a tiny camera through her joint, barely left a mark, and the whole thing was over within a few hours.
The efficiency here isn’t just about speed—it’s how they make a tricky procedure look almost routine.
The specialists are extremely knowledgeable too. Someone else with stubborn wrist pain told us these specialists finally figured out a rare ligament issue that two other clinics had missed.
The only downside is that, with so many experts under one roof, patients might have to wait a bit longer to see a particular specialist. One patient admitted he waited at least 2 weeks for an appointment with his doctor.

The only downside is that they focus mainly on helping people with hip conditions. Anyone needing knee or shoulder care will have to look elsewhere.

He does everything, from basic replacements to advanced treatments like meniscal repairs and even robotic knee replacements.
One patient mentioned they tore their meniscus playing squash, and Bilal’s team stitched it up instead of just removing it. This meant a quicker recovery and less long-term pain.
Dr. Bilal also breaks down every treatment option for his patients in simple terms, so they never feel lost in medical jargon.

My TKR was performed robotically by Mr Bilal Barkatali 9wks ago at The Spire Manchester Hospital and I couldn’t be happier and more satisfied with the whole process, from the initial out patient consultation, through.to the pre and post op treatment and follow up . Mr Barkatalis initial diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan was exactly what was required and he delivered it professionally and with sensitivity to my initial concerns . Dr. Vijaya Kempanna handles the tough cases—complex trauma and revision surgeries that most surgeons would rather avoid.
One patient came in after a motorbike accident left his hip in pieces. The team basically rebuilt the joint from the ground up, and thanks to their careful aftercare, he was back on his feet in a matter of months.
Another patient, who’d been living with a botched knee surgery from another hospital, said Dr. Kempanna’s revision work felt like a reset button. The new implant actually fit, and the pain that had been his shadow for years was finally gone.
His work on pelvic and sacroiliac joint issues also deserves mention.
One patient told us she’d bounced between clinics for years before Dr Kempanna finally figured out the proper treatment. After her treatment with Dr Kempanna, she was finally able to walk without wincing for the first time in ages.

“Mr Kampenna conducted my hip replacement operation in October 2025. I was worried about infection post op as I was taking immune suppressants but Mr Kampenna used a Pico dressing in order to reduce the risk. My wound was clean following the op and when the staples were removed, it had already healed.
I was so happy with my recovery (which is ongoing at the time of writing) and was soon pain free and on my feet again, which was such a relief after three years of waiting.
I thoroughly recommend Mr Kampenna and hope he will be doing my second hip when required.”
