orthopaedic-specialists-in-manchester

The 5 best orthopaedic specialists in Manchester who’ll help you ditch the painkillers

  • Quality: We verified with specialists whether they were using newer techniques, such as robotic-assisted surgery. We also paid attention to things like awards, ongoing training, and what their peers had to say.
  • Patient Experience: We spoke to people who’d had everything from joint replacements to tricky trauma surgeries.
  • Range of Services: We leaned towards specialists who cover everything, from the first scan to rehab. We also preferred those who can handle both everyday joint issues and the rare, complicated stuff.
  • Follow Up: We looked for specialists who actually follow up on how their patients are doing, set honest expectations, and make it easy to get help after surgery.

We’ve heard plenty of stories about people seeing an orthopaedic specialist, only to get a quick explanation or the usual ‘let’s wait and see’ talk.

One person even got sent for physio for a torn meniscus that, as another surgeon later pointed out, needed keyhole surgery—not stretches with a resistance band.

Hearing about these kinds of experiences made us want to find out which orthopaedic specialists in Manchester actually deliver. So we talked to actual patients, ran surveys, and verified credentials to find ones worth trusting.

Below are the ones who stood out!

How much does it cost to see an orthopaedic specialist in Manchester?

It costs at least £200 to see an orthopaedic specialist in Manchester. This is just an estimate. The actual price will depend on the specialist, the type of treatment you need, and more.

Operating Hours: Open 24 Hours

Manchester Hip & Knee Clinic caught our attention for one main reason: Mr Kim, their lead orthopaedic specialist. He is known for using robotic-assisted surgery and has done more than 1,500 robot-assisted hip and knee replacements.

He uses the MAKO robot arm to tailor each operation to the patient. One former patient told us he was back to cycling quickly after a knee replacement and said the precision led to less swelling and a smaller scar.

Mr Kim also has an excellent bedside manner. One person who’d been told for years to just live with hip arthritis said Mr Kim finally made her feel listened to.

He’s also on top of aftercare. He provides regular post-op check-ins to assess how patients are doing after surgery, whether it was for robotic hip or knee replacement.

Since the clinic only offers private care, appointments here are quick, and there’s no long wait in the waiting room.

The only downside is the price—robotic-assisted procedures here are at the higher end.

Pros

  • Over 1,500 robotic hip and knee replacements
  • Less swelling
  • Smaller scars
  • Great bedside manner
  • On top of aftercare
  • Quick appointments

Cons

  • Expensive

The work they do is life changing

“I can’t thank Mr Kim and his team enough. The work they do is life changing and I’m fortunate enough to be the recipient of a robot assisted hip replacement performed by Mr Kim. Throughout the entire process, Mr Kim has been open, kind, considerate and caring and an absolute leader in his field of work. I can’t recommend him highly enough.”

I felt completely at ease and confident

“A first class experience from beginning to end . The operation for bilateral knee replacements was a complete success and I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Kim to others . With his natural bedside manner  I felt completely at ease and confident that this was the right decision and now 5 months on I know it was the right decision . Thank you for everything and everybody at The Alex who was part of my journey . Nigel Willis”

OrthTeam Centre is a one-stop clinic for anything musculoskeletal or neurological. They handle everything from tricky elbow arthroscopies to sports injuries and pain management, all under one roof.

They are very meticulous during any surgical procedure. One woman who got an elbow arthroscopy told us the surgeon guided a tiny camera through her joint, barely left a mark, and the whole thing was over within a few hours.

The efficiency here isn’t just about speed—it’s how they make a tricky procedure look almost routine.

The specialists are extremely knowledgeable too. Someone else with stubborn wrist pain told us these specialists finally figured out a rare ligament issue that two other clinics had missed.

The only downside is that, with so many experts under one roof, patients might have to wait a bit longer to see a particular specialist. One patient admitted he waited at least 2 weeks for an appointment with his doctor.

Pros

  • For anything musculoskeletal or neurological
  • Takes care of tricky elbow arthroscopies
  • Meticulous surgical procedures
  • Efficient specialists
  • Attentive to details

Cons

  • Wait time for appointments

Wonderful experience

“I saw Prof Bharti and Bethany. They both made me feel at ease as soon as I walked in the room. I got an ultrasound guided injection into my wrist. Nobody likes needles and was particularly anxious!  They diverted my attention by light-hearted chat and I barely felt a thing. Bethany also checked up on me to see that I was okay while having my post-procedure cup. Wonderful experience which made my day. Who can say that about a joint injection!”

staff were extremely helpful and accommodating.

“The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. Although there were no available MRI appointments, because I had travelled from the Isle of Man, they went above and beyond to make sure everything could be arranged during my trip. Truly an amazing team — thank you so much to Hur and Caroline for your kindness and effort!”

3. Manchester Hip Clinic

Address: 170 Barlow Moor Rd

Contact Details: +441614476762

Operating Hours: Open 24 Hours

Website

Manchester Hip Clinic has built a reputation in the North for its stem cell and cartilage therapy, especially for people dealing with early hip arthritis.

Many patients with early arthritis told us that the stem cell therapy here helped delay their need for a full replacement.

What also stood out to us is how they track every single patient who has surgery and feed that data into the Non-Arthroplasty Joint Registry. This lets them see exactly how their results compare with those of other clinics across the UK.

They also offer robot-assisted hip replacements. Before surgery, their orthopaedic team walks patients through a 3D hip model and explains how the MAKO robot helps avoid removing more bone than necessary.

Another patient said his recovery after his hip replacement was smooth, with less pain and a quicker return to walking.

The only downside is that they focus mainly on helping people with hip conditions. Anyone needing knee or shoulder care will have to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Stem cell and cartilage therapy
  • Perfect for those with hip arthritis
  • Keeps track of patient outcomes
  • Robot-assisted hip replacements
  • Smooth recoveries

Cons

  • Focus on hip-related issues

The whole team were professional and friendly

“Professor Max Fehily preformed a Mako total hip replacement on the 11th September 2025. I was impressed by his professionalism and his ability to explain the procedure in a manner I could understand. In fact the whole team were professional and friendly throughout the procedure and my recovery. My recovery has been excellent with good aftercare and access to physiotherapy. I’m delighted with the results, getting back to walking and cycling without any pain. Can’t fault the care and would rate him and the team 5 star. Top man in my option.”

Genuinely cares about you as his patient.

“If you need a hip procedure then MHC is definitely the place.

Starting with the receptionist/ secretaries , first consultation , then forward to the post operation after care is first class.

The nurses are caring and considerate and hospital staff are cheerful .

The kind Anesthetist explains the operation and puts you at ease.

Prof. Fehily is both friendly and professional with expert knowledge and genuinely cares about you as his patient.

Having a full hip replacement is daunting, , MHC for me was the right choice.”

The Knee Clinic only does knees, and they do them well. Dr. Bilal, their lead orthopaedic specialist, has performed thousands of knee surgeries.

He does everything, from basic replacements to advanced treatments like meniscal repairs and even robotic knee replacements.

One patient mentioned they tore their meniscus playing squash, and Bilal’s team stitched it up instead of just removing it. This meant a quicker recovery and less long-term pain.

Dr. Bilal also breaks down every treatment option for his patients in simple terms, so they never feel lost in medical jargon.

One patient told us he’d been stuck with osteoarthritis pain for years, but Bilal’s plan for platelet-rich plasma injections finally gave him real relief.

The consistency of care after the surgery is also impressive. Dr. Bilal checks in every week, tweaks his rehab exercises, and answers every question they have.

The only real downside? The wait times can drag, especially for those trying to get a last-minute appointment.

Pros

  • Thousands of successful knee surgeries
  • Quick recovery times
  • Less pain
  • Breaks down treatment options
  • Excellent aftercare

Cons

  • Wait times are a drag
  • Knee-related issues only

The staff, friendly, helpful and caring

“I received an excellent service from both the team and Dr Barkatali himself. I found him compassionate, considerate and extremely friendly. He was patient and offered other options to try before  succumbing to surgery which we were very grateful for. The hospital treatment and stay were superb. The staff, friendly, helpful and caring i have received excellent physio therapy And after-care, if you have to have a knee replacement, it’s the team to book in with Dr Batkatali is an excellent surgeon. I am very pleased with the result after only eight weeks. I am back on my bike and walking without pain or  aid it’s fabulous.”

More satisfied with the whole process

My TKR was performed robotically by Mr Bilal Barkatali 9wks ago at The Spire Manchester Hospital and I couldn’t be happier and more satisfied with the whole process, from the initial out patient consultation, through.to the pre and post op treatment and follow up . Mr Barkatalis initial diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan was exactly what was required and he delivered it professionally and with sensitivity to my initial concerns . I’ve found Mr Barkatali to be an excellent clinician with excellent interpersonal skills , willing to spend time with his patient and answer any queries one might have . I feel like I’ve been given my life back and am looking forward to getting on my bike before too long ! I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Barkatali to anyone who is contemplating a similar intervention.

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Friday – 8 AM to 6PM
  • Saturday – 8 AM to 1 PM

Dr. Vijaya Kempanna handles the tough cases—complex trauma and revision surgeries that most surgeons would rather avoid.

One patient came in after a motorbike accident left his hip in pieces. The team basically rebuilt the joint from the ground up, and thanks to their careful aftercare, he was back on his feet in a matter of months.

Another patient, who’d been living with a botched knee surgery from another hospital, said Dr. Kempanna’s revision work felt like a reset button. The new implant actually fit, and the pain that had been his shadow for years was finally gone.

His work on pelvic and sacroiliac joint issues also deserves mention.

One patient told us she’d bounced between clinics for years before Dr Kempanna finally figured out the proper treatment. After her treatment with Dr Kempanna, she was finally able to walk without wincing for the first time in ages.

The only real downside? When the clinic gets busy, follow-up appointments can feel rushed. A few people mentioned having to wait around just to get their questions in.

Pros

  • Handles complex trauma cases
  • Careful aftercare
  • Excellent revision work
  • Pelvic and sacroiliac joint issues

Cons

  • Appointments can be rushed

I was so happy with my recovery

“Mr Kampenna conducted my hip replacement operation in October 2025. I was worried about infection post op as I was taking immune suppressants but Mr Kampenna used a Pico dressing in order to reduce the risk. My wound was clean following the op and when the staples were removed, it had already healed.

I was so happy with my recovery (which is ongoing at the time of writing) and was soon pain free and on my feet again, which was such a relief after three years of waiting.

I thoroughly recommend Mr Kampenna and hope he will be doing my second hip when required.”

Have been very grateful for the advice and medical knowledge

“Mr Kempanna has just done a great job on replacing my right hip joint. It that was pretty tricky due to my medical conditions however from start to finish I have felt listened too, supported and have been very grateful for the advice and medical knowledge and expertise delivered by Mr Kempanna. I’ve just had my 6 week check and my recovery is going well. Very nice consultant too which helps when you are worried and in pain, highly recommend.”
