5 Best Renovation Contractors in Edinburgh for a Brilliant Home Upgrade

  • Craftsmanship and Quality: I looked for solid workmanship and finishes that won’t start showing their age too soon.
  • Service Range: I favoured teams that can handle several trades in-house, so you’re not juggling half of Edinburgh’s tradespeople yourself.
  • Communication and Transparency: I checked for clear quotes, sensible updates, and contractors who don’t vanish once the dust starts flying.
  • Local Property Experience: I gave extra credit to builders who know their way around tenements, period homes, and listed properties.

I had one good interior designer visit, and suddenly every tired corner at home started looking suspicious. If, like me, you’re itching to give yours a proper glow-up, finding the best renovation contractor in Edinburgh is a very good place to start.

The right team can turn big ideas into something far less chaotic than a months-long building saga. Think smarter layouts, polished kitchens, thoughtful extensions, and fewer nasty surprises along the way.

So I looked at Edinburgh contractors with the skills to handle homes and commercial spaces alike. Here are the names worth knowing before you start knocking down walls.

How much does it cost to hire a renovation contractor in Edinburgh?

Renovation costs in Edinburgh depend heavily on the size and complexity of the job. General builders typically charge around £200 to £350 per day, while ongoing structural work can cost £1,000 to £2,000 per week.

A bathroom renovation may run from £6,350 to £15,000. Kitchens tend to cost more, at roughly £11,700 to £28,000.

A full house rewire usually falls between £4,700 and £6,350. Interior painting is considerably lighter on the wallet at around £440 to £600 per room.

Period properties can cost more when older wiring, plumbing, stonework, or hidden structural issues crop up. It’s sensible to leave a little breathing room in the budget for surprises.

Hours: Contact to schedule an appointment

Hiprobuild Contracts LTD is a strong choice if you’d prefer one team to steer the renovation from start to finish.

They handle extensions, full refurbishments, kitchens, and bathrooms. They also offer carpentry and bespoke joinery, with multiple trades available when needed. That makes them particularly appealing for projects with several moving parts.

Free quotations give you room to discuss the scope properly before making any decisions.

Their portfolio includes work in Abriachan and North Kessock, offering a useful glimpse at the range of projects they take on.

They’re listed with Scotland Trusted Trader too, which adds a welcome layer of independent reassurance.

The main drawback is that their full-service setup may be more than you need for a very small, straightforward job. For a quick cosmetic fix, a smaller specialist could be the neater fit.

Pros

  • Handles extensions, refurbishments, kitchens, bathrooms, carpentry, and bespoke joinery
  • Multiple trades available under one roof
  • Free quotations available
  • Portfolio includes projects in Abriachan and North Kessock
  • Listed with Scotland Trusted Trader

Cons

  • Full-service setup may be more than needed for a very small, straightforward job

Customer Reviews

Highly recommended for anyone looking for a trustworthy contractor.

We had a great experience with Hiprobuild Contracts Ltd from start to finish. The team was professional, reliable, and very easy to communicate with. They completed the work on time, kept the site clean, and paid attention to every detail. The quality of the workmanship was excellent, and the final result exceeded our expectations. It’s rare to find a company that combines skill, honesty, and good customer service so well. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a trustworthy contractor.

The workmanship was top-notch, and I would definitely use them again.

Karol and the team were superb. They completely redid my kitchen, from sistering the floor joists through to installing a fitted kitchen. In addition, they also replastered a bedroom and renovated or replaced several internal doors.

The workmanship was top-notch, and I would definitely use them again

2. Newtown Renovations Ltd

Newtown Renovations Ltd is a strong pick for Edinburgh homes that need a careful hand rather than a wrecking ball. Their sash and case window work is especially handy for period properties where original character still matters.

They cover bespoke joinery, extensions, refurbishments, and other multi-trade jobs. That wider service range can make a renovation feel far less like organising six different trades at once.

A nice extra is the full professional clean they provide after the work is finished.

Their experience with listed buildings and conservation-area properties gives them another edge for older Edinburgh homes.

The only catch is that their broad renovation and restoration focus may be more than you need for a very small, single-trade job. For something quick and simple, a narrower specialist could be the tidier fit.

Pros

  • Strong experience with sash and case window renovation
  • Well suited to period, listed, and conservation-area properties
  • Covers bespoke joinery, kitchens, extensions, and refurbishments
  • Can coordinate multiple trades for larger projects
  • Includes a professional post-renovation clean

Cons

  • Broad renovation focus may exceed small, single-trade needs

Customer Reviews

It was very convenient to have all of these tasks handled in-house.

Newtown Renovations completed work in my flat in a timely and professional manner. I plan to hire them again for our next project. They stepped in when I had been let down by another company and fully delivered. Jonathon and his team carried out joinery, painting, and decorating in a sitting room and completely redid a cloakroom WC, which required painting, joinery, plumbing, tiling, plastering, etc. It was very convenient to have all of these tasks handled in-house.

I would definitely use them again for future projects.

I used Newtown Renovations to refurbish our sash and casement windows; the previous windows were old, damp and very drafty, with lots of flaky paint. The team did a fantastic job at completely refurbishing the windows, and they now look brand new! The work was done efficiently and thoroughly, and I would definitely use them again for future projects.

Cramond Renovations is a strong fit if your project calls for more finesse than a quick patch-up.

With over 25 years in the trade, they cover extensions, interior alterations, kitchens, bathrooms, and bespoke joinery.

Their work leans towards high-end renovations, with a clear emphasis on detail and craftsmanship. That makes them especially appealing for homes where the finish matters just as much as the function.

I like that they can handle several parts of a renovation rather than leaving you to coordinate every trade yourself. Their joinery work is another standout if you want something more tailored than off-the-shelf.

The downside is that they’re closed at weekends, which may make consultations less convenient.

Their detail-led approach may feel like more than you need for a very basic, purely functional job, too.

Pros

  • Over 25 years of industry experience
  • Handles extensions, interior alterations, kitchens, and bathrooms
  • Offers bespoke joinery and carpentry
  • Strong emphasis on detailed craftsmanship and finish
  • Suited to high-end, tailored renovation projects

Cons

  • Closed on Saturdays and Sundays
  • Detail-led approach may be more than needed for a very basic, functional job

Customer Reviews

We have been massively impressed with Tom, Dave, Jackson and the entire team at Cramond Renovations.

We have been massively impressed with Tom, Dave, Jackson and the entire team at Cramond Renovations who undertook a full house renovation, a 7-month project. Being honest, before the project began we were a little nervous about the official admin process, which was a little slow and required a bit of nudging. It became quickly apparent that this was because Tom mainly spent his time on-site managing the team and the project, which is a rare blessing these days and exactly what you want when it comes round to your project!

The quality is excellent; the price reflects this.

The quality is excellent; the price reflects this. If you’re looking for a cheap Job, Crammond Renovations are NOT for you. You’ll get what you pay for. Additions and adjustments in scope and price are managed transparently.

Tom Brady has some unconventional methods and, like everyone, can make you crazy. He does weekly invoices (yes, it does work), no retention fee (it’s OK, you’ll find that it’s not necessary) and can tell you he needs materials NOW and then not use them for a while (just expect it). I’m certain we drove him nuts at times.

4. Cedar Developments

Cedar Developments is the kind of firm I’d shortlist for an Edinburgh home where the details really matter. They specialise in premium renovations for period and listed properties, with interior design and bespoke joinery handled in-house.

Their Edinburgh workshop produces fitted wardrobes, cabinetry, doors, and other custom pieces. That makes the whole setup feel nicely cohesive rather than cobbled together from different suppliers.

They can take on structural alterations and larger extensions too, so there’s plenty of scope for ambitious projects.

Their award history adds a reassuring bit of third-party recognition to the mix.

The catch is that their premium, all-trades approach may be more than you need for a simple cosmetic refresh. For a quick paint-and-polish job, a smaller specialist could be the tidier choice.

Pros

  • Specialises in period and listed-property renovations
  • Offers in-house interior design
  • Has its own Edinburgh workshop for bespoke joinery
  • Handles structural alterations and larger extensions
  • Has received multiple renovation-industry awards

Cons

  • Premium, all-trades approach may be more than needed for a simple cosmetic refresh

Customer Reviews

The Cedar Team was absolutely fantastic, delivering a very successful renovation project of our home.

The Cedar Team was absolutely fantastic, delivering a very successful renovation project of our home, which included 2 new bathrooms, the repurposing of 2 public rooms, associated electrical and plumbing works and redecoration. The quality of workmanship and attention to detail was first-class, and we are delighted with the results. We would have no reservations about recommending the Cedar Team, and we look forward to working with Cedar again. Kevin & Sarah

If I could do it all again, I’d do it all the same.

Cedar was definitely the right team for my renovation project. It required everything: a completely new kitchen and bathroom, windows, a full rewire, and everything in between. The quality of the work they did was top-tier, and the whole place turned out exactly how I wanted. If I could do it all again, I’d do it all the same.

5. MRM Construction Solutions Ltd

mrm-construction-solutions-ltd

Address: 14/1 Brunswick Rd

Contact: +44 7388 967451 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 6 PM

MRM Construction Solutions Ltd is a handy pick if your renovation list includes both bigger upgrades and those smaller jobs that never seem to disappear. They cover tiling, carpentry, kitchens, repairs, maintenance, and wider home improvements.

I like that they offer service in both English and Ukrainian, which makes them stand out locally.

Their upfront-pricing approach and £5 million public liability cover add a reassuring bit of structure too.

For smaller fixes, the turnaround can be refreshingly quick, with many simple jobs taking around 30 minutes to two hours. That makes them especially useful when your project is more practical than palatial.

The main limitation is that their broad handyman and maintenance focus may be less suited to highly specialised heritage restoration work. For intricate conservation projects, a dedicated heritage specialist could be the better fit.

Pros

  • Over 10 years of industry experience
  • Covers repairs, maintenance, tiling, carpentry, kitchens, and wider renovations
  • Offers service in both English and Ukrainian
  • Promotes upfront pricing with no hidden fees
  • Carries £5 million public liability insurance
  • Many small repair jobs may take around 30 minutes to two hours

Cons

  • Broad handyman and maintenance focus may be less suited to highly specialised heritage restoration work

Customer Reviews

Ruslan made sure that everything was communicated clearly and politely, and that the work was completed on time.

Ruslan recently completed a renovation of our bathroom. We had a hidden leak for a long time, so everything had to be stripped away and dried out before installing the new bathroom. It was quite a challenging job because of the dampness and damage, but Ruslan made sure that everything was communicated clearly and politely, and that the work was completed on time. He and his assistant did a fantastic job with the installation, and he also helped to advise on the design, layout, and choice of new materials.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Hello everyone who’s reading this and thinking of taking on a job with MRM Construction.

Don’t hesitate at all, Ruslan. The boss and his team are well-oiled machines; they are professional people and easy to communicate with, and most importantly, if you have any doubts about the work, honest advice is available to meet your needs. I have my flat renovation done l am very happy with the work carried out from start to finish.

Thank you, Ruslan and your team.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
